What are the Odds of Winning a Charity Sweepstakes?
There’s no hard and set answer for your odds of winning a charity sweepstakes since it depends on the number of entries and the number of drawings. However, there is a hard and set formula! If there is only one drawing for one prize, take your number of entries and divide that number by the number of total entries. This is your probability of winning the prize. However, if there are multiple prizes, then the odds of winning the charity sweepstakes becomes a little more complicated.
Below, we list a few different formulas for determining your odds of winning a charity sweepstakes. We also offer some ideas for increasing your chances of going home with a prize.
Formulas for Determining Your Odds of Winning a Charity Sweepstakes
There are a few different formulas you can use for determining your chance of winning, depending on whether the sweepstakes offers one prize or multiple prizes.
Odds of a Charity Sweepstakes with One Prize
If there is only one drawing for one prize in the sweepstakes, the formula is simple. Divide your number of entries by the number of total entries. This gives you your probability of winning the single sweepstakes prize.
For instance, if you have 20 entries out of 1600 total entries, your odds of winning the prize are 0.0125 or 1.25%.
Odds of Winning a Charity Sweepstakes with Multiple Prizes
To determine the odds of winning a charity sweepstakes with multiple prizes, you have two options. For a close estimate, you can subtract your number of entries from the total number of entries, then divide that number by the total number of entries. Then raise that number to the power of x, with x being the number of prizes. Finally, subtract that number from one, and you have your odds for winning one of the prizes.
For example, if you had 20 entries out of 1683 total entries, and the charity sweepstakes was giving away 15 prizes, you would use the following formula:
For a ≈0.1642 or 16% chance of winning a prize.
If you want to get more exact, you can use binomial coefficients. Some charity sweepstakes will not draw the same number twice, which makes your odds slightly different with each draw. For instance,in the previous example there are 1683 total entries for the first drawing, but for the second drawing there would only be 1682 total entries, making your odds slightly higher than the first draw(assuming you still have 20 entries).
Using binomial coefficients, you would use the following formula:
The answer will probably end up being pretty close to the first formula, but will be a little more exact.
How Can You Improve Your Odds of Winning a Charity Sweepstakes?
Now that you know how to calculate your odds of winning one of the prizes, it’s time to strategize how to further improve your odds! Below are some ideas for improving your chances in a sweepstakes.
Increase Your Entries
This probably goes without saying, but one of the easiest ways to increase your odds of winning a sweepstakes is to increase your number of entries. The greater your number of entries, the more chances you have to be drawn for a prize.
Look for Bonus Entries
Sometimes sweepstakes like the Shop4Charity 2019 Calendars for Cause Sweepstakes will have certain offers that include bonus entries. This is a great way to get some extra entries to improve your chances of winning.
Choose a Sweepstakes With More Prizes
As we saw in the above examples, the more prizes a charity sweepstakes offers the better your odds are of winning a prize.
